The Practice of living lightly

Explore Your Mind: how mental weight is made, and how to set it down

Explore Your Mind is an interactive map of how the mind creates worry, overthinking and stress. At its centre are the three brains — the Story Brain, the Alarm Brain and the Action Brain, known to neuroscience as the default mode, salience and executive control networks — and the loop they form when a passing thought becomes a sleepless night.

Explore eighty connected ideas about the workings of the mind, from the ARIA Compass and the Calming Cabinet to loss aversion, perseverative cognition and the science of the breath. Each idea opens into a short explanation, links to the ideas around it, and leads to a full article. Or start with what is weighing on you: sixty-seven everyday questions about yourself, the people in your life and the situations you face, from why you keep replaying a conversation to what to do when your boss takes credit for your work. Each one is untangled into what lies underneath it and one small step to take.

A different selection of ideas and questions appears every day. The ideas come from articles on this site, including Your Fear Isn’t All Real, The Calming Cabinet and The Thought Diet, and from the book Live Lightly: Outsmart Fear. Decide Faster. Win More. by Dr Pradeep Ramayya.
